Palmed off in Spain

TORREMOLINOS Town Hall has learnt the hard way that nothing in life is free.

The donation of 20,000 palm trees in April – worth around €2 million – could actually end up costing the town hall more due to the huge risk of infestation from red palm weevils.

Indeed, prevention alone is expected to cost the town hall at least €150,000 a year.

“The donation obliges us to pay for these treatments,” admitted councillor Jose Ortiz.
