Benidorm's bars stock up with extra beer ahead of England's first World Cup match on Wednesday night

BENIDORM’S bar and restaurant owners are expecting beer sales to soar by 30% as England fans watch their team’s first World Cup match against Croatia on Wednesday night.

The opening group game for the Three Lions kicks-off at 10pm(Spanish time) at the Dallas Stadium in Texas.

Benidorm’s Abreca hospitality association says that up 50,000 litres of beer could be downed on Wednesday.

It suggests that an average of over 80 litres of booze will be sunk at each of its 500-plus member premises.

Most businesses have installed large screens indoors and on terraces so that football fans can follow their teams during the tournament.

There’s been an 18% uptake on flights to Alicante-Elche airport during June from the UK, which has been put down to soccer fans wanting to follow the matches on the Costa Blanca.

Some England supporters have opted to watch the World Cup in Benidorm, rather than shelling out on expensive trips and tickets in the United States.

Fans have preferred to enjoy following the action at a low cost with good weather, food, and cheap alcohol guaranteed.

Abreca’s president, Irene Carreño, said that matches involving England and Scotland as well as Spain significantly push up bar users.

Once a tournament moves to the semi-finals and final, beer consumption doubles, according to Carreño.

The extra number of visitors has led to a special security operation, coordinated by the Benidorm Policia Local and the Policia Nacional over the period of the World Cup.

Riot police are stand-by in case there are any problems.
