Gibraltar general election set for December 8

A GENERAL election is to be held in Gibraltar on December 8.

Chief Minister Peter Caruana informed the Governor of the date on Thursday, before Parliament was formally dissolved .

Voters will go to the polls for the first time since 2007 – when the Gibraltar Social Democrats sealed a fourth consecutive victory after obtaining 49 per cent of the vote.

The general election will be contested between the GSD, the GSLP Liberals and the Progressive Democratic Party, with opinion polls indicating the GSLP Liberals are favourites to come to power.

Caruana, who had come under increasing pressure to make an announcement, will head a caretaker government between now and the election.
