The 14 days quarantine restriction currently in place for holiday makers returning from Spain may be slashed to just 8 days.

It comes as a group of cross party politicians and figureheads urged Boris Johnson to rethink border regulations in an open letter.

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair told the PM, “The insistence on the current quarantine measures is doing huge harm to the British economy – quite unnecessarily so”.

Meanwhile, Spain’s tourism sector has recorded its worst semester ever, with a 97% drop in visitors.

Labour MP Nick Thomas-Symonds told Home Secretary Priti Patel: “Given the huge challenges faced by the travel sector and the scale of job losses, it makes sense to look at this area as part of a wider package of improvements.”

Government officials have since said work is ongoing to consider if, how and when testing could be used to minimise the isolation period inflicted on travellers.

The Mail on Sunday have reported self-isolation could be cut down to as little as 8 days.

In preparation, Heathrow airport have set up the UK’s first airport testing facility with capacity to test 13,000 people a day.
