NEW coronavirus outbreaks in Elche and Dénia have contributed to the upward rise in COVID-19 cases across the Costa Blanca.
Latest figures from the Valencian Health Ministry released on Wednesday night(September 9) show 245 new infections in Alicante Province, a rise of 31 since Tuesday’s previous report.
159 people are in hospitals across the region, with 26 patients in intensive care.
9,179 COVID-19 cases have been identified in Alicante Province since the start of the pandemic.
Health officials said that there had been outbreaks involving 11 people in Elche and five in Dénia.
They added that the new infections had been caused by people in ‘social situations’.
Valencian Health Minister, Ana Barcelo, this week demanded that Dénia council and 12 other Costa Blanca authorities should do more to stop rising COVID-19 numbers caused by residents flouting rules.
Dénia alone has 222 confirmed cases in 15 days.
