SPAIN is to wave off this year’s Semana Santa in a blaze of warm weather and brilliant sunshine, the state weather agency has announced.

The AEMET says temperatures will climb steadily across the peninsula by next Monday, with highs pushing up to 30°C in parts of Andalucia and the south.

Cordoba and Linares are expected to sizzle at around 30C, with Almeria not far behind at a slightly milder 26C.

Along the coast, cooling sea breezes will take the edge off the heat in Malaga and Cadiz, where temperatures will hover around 23C, while inland Granada and Moron de la Frontera are set to bask in much warmer conditions, reaching close to 29C.

The early taste of summer is arriving ahead of schedule this year, with such high temperatures typically not seen until well into May.

However, the sunshine will not last uninterrupted. AEMET is also forecasting a ‘notable’ drop in temperatures as early as next Tuesday, as a mass of warm air is pushed away into Europe by westerly winds.

The shift is expected to bring an average nationwide drop of around four degrees, with overnight lows dipping sharply to near 1C in Asturias and Galicia, and around 4C in Madrid.

Andalucia, meanwhile, is set to hold onto relatively pleasant spring conditions, with daytime highs settling comfortably between 21C and 26C.

So stock up on sunscreen and dust off your shades – the winter is finally over, and the sun has come to stay.
