SHOCK has hit Spain after the nation’s most famous bullfighter ended up in a ‘very serious’ condition after a raging bull gored his bottom.
Jose Antonio Morante Camacho, known as Morante de la Puebla, was participating in Sevilla’s Feria de Abril when a bull hurled him against the sand, trampled on his back and caused grave injuries.
Spectators watched on as the fighter, who was visibly in pain, grabbed his behind with his left hand.
All they could see was a small hole in the breaches of his left thigh with no blood being visible.
Once he was moved to the medical centre however, the extent of his injuries became clear as Morante was rushed into surgery to undergo an operation that lasted over two hours.
During this time the wound was cleansed, the rectal wall and the sphincteric apparatus were repaired and the postanal and retrorectal areas were drained.
What medics were treating was described as an ‘injury by a bull’s horn […] extending approximately 10cm, partially damaging the rear sphincter muscles, with a 1.5cm perforation in the posterior wall of the rectum’.
The bull that caused such an injury was the fourth of the day.
Named Clandestino, the 512kg bull from the Hermanos Garcia Jimenez ranch appeared to be distracted when it first entered the ring.
This initial distraction dissipated with the animal not following Morante’s cape-led cues to stop running.
This distressing watch differed from Morante’s encounter with the first bull of the day.
There the famous fighter showed aggression and agility which allowed him to kill the bull – although he did walk away with torn breeches and a cut up ear.
As Morante rests in a Sevilla hospital bed, one of his doctors, Octavia Mulet, has publicly called the incident ‘very serious’.
It left a sour taste in the mouths of spectators who witnessed the harrowing moment that the fighter went down injured and were left wondering what will happen to him, his season and his career as a whole.
