Welsh singing legend Bonnie Tyler placed in induced coma at Portuguese hospital after emergency intestinal surgery

A WORLD renowned UK singer is currently in an Algarve intensive care unit to recover from an urgent operation, but her team insists she will make a full recovery.

Bonnie Tyler, one of Wales’ most famous performers, was placed in an induced coma after undergoing an emergency intestinal surgery.

A spokesperson reported that the 74-year-old singer was brought to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, last Wednesday for the procedure.

The vocalist was expected to start a European tour with 30 dates later this month, with the final date taking place in Cardiff this December.

Tyler’s team made the first announcement on her website regarding the singer’s health on May 6, saying she had been admitted to a Faro hospital for an emergency intestinal surgery.

Two days later, her team posted a new update that Tyler was put into an induced coma by doctors to help with her recovery process.

‘We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time,’ the team wrote online.

Today a new update was shared, claiming that while the singer was still seriously ill, she is stable.

The newest announcement assured Tyler’s fans that doctors believe she will make a full recovery.

Tyler’s website also addressed the circulating rumours made by Liberto Mealha, one of Bonnie’s longtime friends from Portugal who gave the media alleged information relating to her health.

Mealha, the owner of a well-known nightclub in Albufeira, told the media that Tyler felt ill after a concert in London, but doctors hadn’t detected anything at the time.

He claims that it wasn’t until after she returned to Algarve that she started having severe abdominal pain.

There was also buzz from Mealha that the singer had to be resuscitated after going into cardiac arrest when doctors tried to bring her out of the coma.

However, Tyler’s family has come back online to say that none of this is true.

The family stated they are ‘very disappointed at the many lurid and untrue rumours now circulating the media and would like to make it clear that Liberto Mealha does not represent them in any way whatsoever and is not in contact with them regarding Bonnie.’

The global superstar had her breakthrough in the late 70s with her album The World Starts Tonight with the 1978 hit single ‘It’s a Heartache’ which topped the charts in both the UK and US.

Her international fame was solidified in 1983 with the hits ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ and ‘Holding Out for a Hero’.
