UPCOMING regional elections in Andalucia brought the conservative Vox party leader to Mijas for a speech to discuss drug trafficking and security.
In a strongly worded speech on Wednesday, Vox leader Santiago Abascal launched a fresh attack on both the Socialist PSOE government and the centre-right PP while visiting the Costa del Sol.
Abascal took aim at PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s suggestion of providing Guardia Civil officers with ‘non-lethal means’ to combat drug traffickers.
“It worries me that Mr. Feijóo is not capable of moving beyond the discourse of political correctness,” Abascal said during his speech at Plaza Virgen de la Pena in Mijas.
He added that narcos who are ‘armed to the teeth’ must read such proposals and ‘laugh and breathe a sigh of relief.’
The remarks come days after the deaths of two Guardia Civil officers in operations linked to narco-trafficking in Andalucia.
Abascal accused Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska of empty rhetoric, calling him a ‘heartless minister’ who has failed to equip security forces with the necessary material and legal tools.
Positioning Vox as the only party willing to confront the problem head-on, Abascal contrasted his party’s focus on ‘what matters’ with what he called distractions and evasions by rivals.
The visit to Mijas forms part of Vox’s campaigning efforts ahead of regional elections, emphasizing law and order and tougher anti-narco policies.
Vox recently had its ‘national priority’ motion blocked by Marbella Town Hall due to claims that its measures discriminated against foreign residents and undermined equal access.
Andalucia’s regional election is set to take place next Sunday on May 17.
