EMERGENCY services in Castilla y Leon are trying to find a 61-year-old British mountaineer who became lost in the Picos de Europa.

The man contacted authorities at around 7pm on Thursday to say he had become disorientated.

The exhausted Brit did not know how to pinpoint his exact location as the weather turned worse with strong winds and heavy rain.

Staff tried to determine his position by means of coordinates, which placed him in the Moeño channel close to Torre de Pamaprorroso.

It is an area that’s difficult to access in the central massif of the Picos de Europa.

A rescue helicopter was mobilised and carried out several reconnaissance flights without being able to locate the mountaineer.

With worsening conditions and visibility, the search operation continued on foot.

Rescuers at nightfall reached the area where it was believed the British man might be.

NIGHT SEARCH

Work continued into the early hours of Friday despite heavy snow hindering mobility and tracking.

After a break, the search resumed a few hours later with a mobile command post set up by the Civil Protection and Emergency Agency.

The rescue helicopter is still in the area to resume work, once weather conditions allow it to do so.

The Emergency Coordination Centre in Castilla y Leon has also asked for help from the neighbouring Asturias region to try to locate the mountaineer.
