Spain becomes one of the largest training grounds in Europe for Ukrainian soldiers fighting off Russian invasion

SPAIN has become one of Europe’s biggest training hubs for Ukrainian troops as the country steps up its military support against Russia’s invasion.

More than 9,000 Ukrainian soldiers have now completed training in Spain under the European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM), according to the Spanish Defence Staff.

However, Spain’s figures are dwarfed by those of the Poland and United Kingdom, who have trained 38,000 and 62,000 respectively.

The Spanish programme, launched by the EU in late 2022, was designed to strengthen Ukraine’s armed forces as the war with Russia continued to intensify.

Spanish military bases have since played a major role in preparing Ukrainian troops for frontline combat, with much of the coordination centred around the Toledo Training Coordination Centre.

During the first months of 2026 alone, Spain expanded its instruction programmes across a wide range of military specialties.

Recent training courses have included advanced military topography, military police operations, armoured recovery vehicle courses, further Leopard 2A4 tank maintenance and operational training.

Spanish defence officials said around 8,000 Ukrainian troops were trained during 2025 through more than 185 training modules covering 30 military specialties.

That programme has now grown even further, with more than 230 modules across 40 specialties being offered.

The training effort is not being carried out solely by the Spanish Armed Forces. The Guardia Civil has also joined the programme, drawing on experience from previous international missions in Iraq, Mali and Somalia.

Spain’s support for Ukraine has also expanded beyond military training. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced a fresh military aid package worth €1 billion for Ukraine in 2026.
