IGNACIO Echeverria, the Spanish ‘skateboard hero’ who sacrificed his life confronting terrorists during the London Bridge attack, will be honoured this Saturday as Estepona names a new sports complex after him.
The young Madrileno became a symbol of courage across Europe after running towards jihadists armed with knives in an attempt to protect complete strangers during the 2017 terror attack in London.
On the night of June 3, 2017, three terrorists drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before launching a brutal knife rampage through nearby streets and restaurants.

But while terrified crowds fled Borough Market in panic, Echeverria instead ran straight towards the danger after spotting a woman being repeatedly stabbed.
According to witnesses, he grabbed his skateboard and used it to confront the attackers, buying precious seconds for several people to escape.
Moments later, he was fatally wounded.

In the days that followed, tributes poured in from across both Spain and Britain, where many saw him as the very definition of courage and selflessness.
Queen Elizabeth II would later posthumously award him the George Medal, one of the UK’s highest civilian honours for bravery.
Now, nearly nine years on from the attack, Estepona is set to ensure his memory lives on permanently.
For that reason, the Ayuntamiento will officially inaugurate a new sports area in Cancelada bearing his name on May 23.
The choice of location is especially symbolic because the complex on Avenida de las Palmeras already featured a skate park before undergoing its recent expansion.

In addition to the skate facilities, the site now includes a calisthenics park, petanque courts, table tennis areas and newly landscaped green spaces.
Meanwhile, the surrounding area has also been upgraded with benches, picnic tables and improved public spaces aimed at bringing the community together.
According to the Ayuntamiento, the project was designed not only as a sports facility, but also as a place reflecting the values of solidarity, coexistence and community spirit associated with Echeverria’s legacy.
Saturday’s opening ceremony will begin at 9.30am with a match between the petanque clubs of Estepona and Cancelada.
Later, at 12.30pm, visitors will be able to watch a CrossFit NXS exhibition followed by a calisthenics demonstration.
The emotional highlight of the day is expected at 1.30pm with the official unveiling of the plaque dedicated to Ignacio Echeverria.
Afterwards, the celebrations will continue with a skateboarding exhibition before ending with a public paella tasting organised together with the Asociacion de Vecinos de Cancelada.
Ignacio Echeverria’s father, Joaquin Echeverria, is expected to attend alongside British Vice-Consul in Malaga Miriam Perez and other local authorities.
For many in Spain, the young lawyer who faced terrorists armed with nothing became a national hero.
