A BRITISH holidaymaker has died after being pulled from the sea at a popular beach in the Canary Islands.
Emergency services were called to the scenic Playa de la Escalera on the northern coast of Fuerteventura at around 5.30pm on Thursday evening after receiving reports of two people in difficulty in the water.
One of the swimmers was able to get out of the choppy sea without assistance, before receiving medical treatment from paramedics.
The second person was winched out of the water after a rescue operation involving a helicopter from the Canary Islands Emergency and Rescue Group was launched.
He was subsequently found to be in a state of cardiac arrest.
Paramedics immediately began CPR but were unable to revive him, with his death confirmed at the scene.
Officers from the Guardia Civil have opened an investigation and will prepare an official report into the incident.
