THE number of holiday rental properties advertised online in the Canary Islands has fallen by 15% in just one year, according to new official figures.
Some 39,678 holiday homes were listed on digital booking platforms in July 2026 for holidaymakers visiting the archipelago, offering space for more than 160,000 guests.
But that number represents a 15 per cent drop from July 2025, with total bed capacity falling by an even sharper 16 per cent.
Despite the fall, demand for holiday rentals remains exceptionally strong, according to the Canary Islands Statistics Institute’s Experimental Holiday Rental Statistics, which tracks accommodation advertised through digital platforms.
A huge 95.5 per cent of properties – nearly 38,000 homes – received at least one booking during July.
In terms of individual islands, Tenerife continues to lead the way, accounting for 41 per cent of all holiday rentals available.
That is followed by Gran Canaria with 21 per cent, Lanzarote with 17 per cent and Fuerteventura with 14 per cent.
The fall comes amid increasing scrutiny of holiday lets across the islands, with authorities cracking down on properties operating without the necessary permissions.
In La Laguna, for example, the council recently ordered 1,093 holiday rentals to be removed from the register after finding that 92 per cent of those reviewed lacked the required planning permission.
