Fellow beachgoers immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the sand in a desperate attempt to save his life.

The emergency coordination centre deployed crew from the 061 health emergencies centre, alongside officers from the Policia Local and the Guardia Civil.

Despite the rapid response of the emergency teams and the resuscitation efforts on the beach, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Medical staff confirmed he died on the sand, meaning no hospital transfer could take place.

The Guardia Civil has now activated the standard judicial protocol to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

An autopsy will determine whether the octogenarian drowned or suffered a fatal medical episode while in the water.
