A SEARCH is underway for an English football fan who went missing while travelling to the US to watch the Three Lions’ next World Cup fixture.
Michael Hewitt lost contact with his family on June 21 during a layover in Barcelona, the Daily Mirror reported.
He had left Leeds on June 20 to attend the England-Ghana match, which was scheduled for June 23.
The 65-year-old, also known as ‘Little Mick’, is a well-known Leeds United supporter and was en route to Boston when he suddenly went offline and stopped communicating with his family.
Sources say the last confirmed contact was in the early hours of Sunday, when he was still in the Spanish city.
However, Barcelona’s Mossos d’Esquadra told The Olive Press Hewitt is currently not listed as a missing person in Spain.
His brother Gary and sister Jan McCluskey have told the BBC they were worried about the disappearance, adding there were ‘so many uncertainties.’
They have reportedly contacted the last bar Mick visited in Barcelona, whose manager told Jan he did not appear intoxicated or unwell when he left at around midnight.
Gary has not ruled out the possibility that he may have flown elsewhere in the US, possibly New Jersey, where England defeated Panama on June 27.
He said the Leeds United fanbase had been ‘incredible’ in its response and the volume of shares online.
A recent Facebook update from ‘The Leeds Salute’, speaking on behalf of the family, said ‘nothing seems to happen quickly,’ but that they had received ‘a couple of very promising possible sightings’ of Mick.
Interpol is assisting with efforts to establish whether he has left Spain or is still in the country.
