CATALUNYA’S regional police have launched a manhunt after a convicted killer who dismembered his landlord and disposed of his torso in a suitcase escaped during an escorted prison leave.
William Morrow Anderson, an Irishman who admitted to killing his landlord in 2022, was serving a 10-year jail sentence when he gave his captors the slip in Barcelona.
But he was allowed to stroll around the city and enjoy a cup of coffee, an opportunity that he had already been granted on several occasions as part of an opening programme of the Catalan jails.
Just as he was in a car with his therapist and girlfriend to go back to prison, he took the opportunity presented by a red light and jumped out of the car.
He was last seen on Tuesday, July 21, on a street in Barcelona called Calle La Marina, Spanish news website El Caso reported.
His partner insisted she had no idea of what Anderson had been planning or where he was.
Anderson’s victim, Alireza Rahideh, of Iranian origin, was found dismembered after a scrap dealer searching through rubbish containers discovered a torso inside a suitcase.
Other body parts were later found hidden at several locations close to Rahideh’s apartment on Calle Casanova.
In court, Anderson claimed that Rahideh had tried to sexually assault him on the day of the killing.
He also said he had been under the influence of alcohol when the murder took place.
His prison sentence is now expected to be extended once he is recaptured.
