Two children die in Costa del Sol apartment fire after blaze forces midnight evacuation

TWO children have died in an apartment fire that broke out in a residential building in Benalmadena during the early hours of Thursday morning.

The blaze started inside a property on Calle Onix and quickly spread to affect four homes in the block.

Emergency services were forced to evacuate two entire floors of the building as they battled to bring the flames under control.

Firefighters from Benalmadena and neighbouring Torremolinos rushed to the scene alongside Policia Local officers and medical teams.

The fire broke out on Calle Onyx in the early hours of Thursday morning. Ayuntamiento de Benalmadena

Responders found the fire in a very advanced state upon arrival but managed to rescue several people trapped inside the building.

Despite the efforts of emergency workers, the two minors, aged 10 and 15, were confirmed dead at the scene.

An adult woman was treated by medics and taken to a local hospital where she remains in a serious condition.

One firefighter was injured during the rescue operation.

Several other police officers and firefighters required medical assistance for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire has not yet been released.

The Benalmadena town hall has issued a statement expressing its condolences over the tragic incident.
