ALMOST 50,000 migrants have illegally crossed into Ceuta in the last 24 hours in the worst crisis of its kind to hit Spain in years.
According to the interior ministry, around 49,000 people have poured into the tiny Spanish enclave from its north African neighbour over the past day, including an estimated 7,000 minors.
The figure dwarfs the 2021 crisis, when around 10,000 migrants entered the territory over several days, and represents an astonishing 50% increase in Ceuta’s usual population of around 80,000 people.
However, hundreds of migrants are beginning to turn back and return to Morocco, according to reports, after complaining of too many people in the enclave.
According to El Pais, some have even been threatened by locals, with some residents allegedly throwing rocks or brandishing firearms at the new arrivals.
