OVER 1,100 fines have been issued against electric scooter riders so far this year for flouting the law in Benidorm.

Benidorm’s Policia Local has increased surveillance and extra signs have been put up to warn potential transgressors about a ban on riding scooters in pedestrianised areas.

The city’s Citizen Security councillor, Jesus Carrobles, said that using scooters in such zones is one of the most repeated infractions by riders.

It also leads to the most complaints from pedestrians who are worried about their safety.

Analysis of areas where the most law-breaking takes place has led to extra warning signs being erected to emphasise the scooter ban.

Carrobles said that additional police patrols will be in places with a high influx of pedestrians.

“The aim is not to ‘hunt’ offenders, but to guarantee road safety, especially for pedestrians, but also for scooter riders,” the councillor stated.

“Special attention will be paid to ensure helmets are worn and that riders have compulsory civil liability insurance,” he added.

“We want to encourage all users of public roads to live together in safe conditions.”

The Policia Local has broken down some of the fines issued against offenders since January 1.

The main offence was 251 counts of not having insurance, followed by 149 instances of not wearing a helmet.

132 sanctions were imposed for riding in pedestrian zones, 49 fines for having more than a single rider, and 38 for wearing and using headphones or earpieces when using a scooter.

Jesus Carrobles concluded: “We want to encourage all users of public roads to live together in safe conditions and that means correcting the practices that put at risk and compromise that safety and, if necessary, resort to sanctions.”
