A BOAT captain faces a reckless homicide charge over the death of a British tourist in a Benidorm parasailing accident on August 10.

The Guardia Civil has also accused a second man of a ‘cover up’ over who actually drove the boat which suffered a snap in the cable linked to the parachute.

He could end up having to answer to a criminal charge of concealment.

66-year-old Beverley White from St. Austell in Cornwall was on a tandem ride with an unnamed male companion, 47, when the cable broke and they fell into the sea.

Strong winds at the time then dragged them towards rocks.

Beverley died at the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa as a result of the injuries while the man survived the ordeal.

An inquest was adjourned this month in Truro with the coroner hearing that Beverley went into cardiac arrest after falling into the sea.

A statement released by the Guardia Civil said that officers analysed the circumstances surrounding the accident, including the conditions at the time, as the weather was deteriorating with a storm and strong gusts of wind

It said they had looked into who was in charge of the boat and that a person linked to the company providing the parasailing trip had initially declared himself as the vessel’s captain.

“He later admitted that he was not the person in command at the time of the accident and identified another employee as responsible, with the investigation determining that it was the latter who was operating the boat,” the statement continued.

The Guardia pointed out that the second man was not listed as a crew member with the parasailing company.

The statement concluded: “Two people are under investigation, one of them for the alleged offences of manslaughter and causing injury and the second- who initially claimed to be the skipper- for an alleged offence of concealment.”

The Guardia’s findings have been handed over to a Benidorm court which will decide on what action to take against the men.
