Axarquia impress against Marbella Rugby Club

Axarquia impress against Marbella Rugby Club

WITH nearly 100 people watching at the Fernando Hierro stadium, Axarquia Rugby Club Cadets (U17s) played host to the formidable Marbella Rugby Club on Saturday, 7 January for the first game of 2012.

The Group B opponents in the Andalucian League put on an impressive and skillful display of rugby, all played in good spirit and sportsmanship.

Axarquia took the lead with a penalty after an infringement in the ruck, but Marbella fought back with a try and added a second on the stroke of half time to go into the break 3-10 in the lead.

In a tight match with some ferocious tackling from both teams, the second half continued in the same vein until two refereeing decisions turned the game. The Axarquia centre was rightly yellow carded and sin-binned for 10 minutes after a high tackle. The Marbella backs took advantage of their numerical superiority to run in three further tries and a conversion.

Axarquia were rightly aggrieved five minutes later when a worse and more dangerous tackle by a Marbella back went unpunished much to the astonishment of the crowd.

The game ended 3-32 to Marbella, who now rise to 2nd in the league.

Axarquia’s next match is against Bahia 89 from Cadiz on 14 January 2012 and their next home match on the weekend of 28/29 January is against their fiercest rivals, Malaga Rugby Club.
