Anti-Brexit protests to hit La Linea and Spain’s Malaga as British expats defend their rights ahead of looming EU departure

Brexit Gibraltar march

ANTI-Brexit demonstrations will take place in the coming weeks, in Malaga and La Linea, as the departure day approaches.

Organised via Facebook, an event invited British expats to attend the rally at the Plaza de la Constitucion, Málaga on September 22, while the Socio-Cultural Association of Spanish Workers in Gibraltar (ASCTEG), a non-profit organisation which supports unemployed Spanish residents, have arranged for a demonstration to take place in La Linea on October 19.

Juan Jose Uceda, 70, spokesman for ASTEG, told the Olive Press:

“A Hard Brexit could be terrible and we are scared of the consequences, as more jobs could be lost in La Linea, an area which already sufferers serious unemployment and poverty.

“But it is not just jobs we are concerned with, it’s everything.

“Healthcare, freedom of movement, and even some businesses could be ruined. It means, too, that important transportation, such as medicine, may be impacted.”

REMAINERS: Crowds take to the streets for pro-EU rallies

This comes after the Yellowhammer papers, a cross-government civil contingency plan for the possibility for a no-deal Brexit, suggested Gibraltar is ‘under prepared’ for Britain leaving without a deal

The protests come after Boris Johnson manoeuvred to suspend Parliament for five weeks, between September 10 and 14 October – a move following his unsuccessful bid to call a snap general election.

The prime minister has stated his intention to stay true to the vote of the 2016 referendum and get the UK out of the EU by October 31, regardless of whether a deal is in place.
