LOCKDOWNS across Europe have led to Benidorm and Costa Blanca hotel bookings drying up for Christmas and the New Year.

European and domestic travel restrictions have already caused international as well as Spanish-based customers to cancel end-of-year bookings according to the Hosbec hoteliers association.

Hosbec added that only 24 of Benidorm’s 150 hotels are still open, and they expect more to close their doors for the winter.

A Hosbec spokesman said: “What happens over the next week or two over the regional border closure, the continuation of the night curfew, and the possibility of a lockdown will be crucial in seeing what we can salvage.”

The Alicante Province Hotel Association backed up that view and said that many of their members had also shut down for the next few months or are open just at weekends.

Meanwhile the Valencian Community’s vice-president, Monica Oltra, has suggested that the hospitality industry as a whole should be targetted for further opening restrictions to reduce COVID-19 case levels in the area.
