The Olive Press Round-Up: The biggest stories in Spain

From The Digital Editor

Walter Finch

Dear Olive Press readers,

Welcome back to another round-up of the key news in Spain, and it’s been a grim seven days.

There are fears that a mafia turf war is heating up on the Costa del Sol after a week in which the bodies have dropped like flies.

It started with a narco speed boat dumping a corpse in Puerto Banus in front of horrified onlookers, continued with the remains of a woman washing up on a beach in Algarrobo on the far eastern end of the costa, and didn’t even stop with the discovery of a body in a ditch near Ronda.

IN one of the most chilling scenes witnessed in Marbella’s millionaire marina, a suspected narco speed boat pulled up to the mouth of Puerto Banus, hurled a corpse onto the…

A couple of nights later, police stopped a car that was driving erratically in Marbella and discovered two brothers inside, one who had been shot in the knee. He’s reportedly told investigators that if he talks, he’ll be killed.

This shocking wave of violence has come in spite of the announcement by the Policia Nacional of a huge mafia takedown over the past six weeks. They called a press conference in Malaga – unusual in itself – to announce that they’d dismantled seven separate criminal groups, arrested 55 people – mostly French – and confiscated nine tonnes and drugs, plus a slew of guns and assault rifles.

Good job, huh? Well, as impressive as it is, it hasn’t done much to allay the violence.

The other big story of the week has been the goings on over in – and around – Gibraltar, as negotiating teams try to thrash out the final text for the historic treaty so long in the works.

AFTER months of detente, low-simmering tensions between Gibraltar and Spain are threatening to come to the boil once again – just as a treaty is within sight. Despite the triumphal…

The years-long endeavour to secure a deal to govern the Rock’s relationship with the EU is on the home stretch, but dark forces appear to be gathering to try and derail it.

It’s unclear whether efforts to pick at every old wound and battle ground will pay off. But sources have told me that the process to draft the text of the treaty is dragging on for an unusually long amount of time.

And as more and more details emerge of EES chaos at Malaga airport, it’s very clear that the Rock will want to get that treaty signed and ratified before the malfunctioning system is activated at its border with Spain.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

Worry news is coming out of Galicia and the plague that is the Asian ‘killer’ hornet. It has been living up to its name, taking three lives in as many weeks. Even worse – the deadly insect is taking root in Andalucia.

Residents of Marbella may vaguely be aware of the new breed of British ‘streamer’ – usually male, misogynistic and not-too-bright – who like to hang around in Puerto Banus and other night spots and film their interactions out on the town. Well, the most famous of them, HSTikkyTokky, aka Harrison Sullivan, recently returned to the UK to face a dangerous driving charge he had fled from. The reason he went back? Because he got into a brawl outside a nightclub in Marbella and glassed a guy in the throat, nearly killing him. Find out all about the seedy and sordid adventures of Sullivan here…

Noisy neighbours beware: Spain’s housing laws provide provisions for prosecuting people who make too much racket after hours. This doesn’t just apply to those who insist on hosting the after party in their apartment. It can also include seemingly innocent activities such as running the washing machine, or doing some home DIY.

There has been another interesting Gibraltar development – the long-awaited McGrail report was finally delivered this week. If you’re a fan of behind-the-scenes skulduggery and power struggles that even Shakespeare would struggle to concoct, look no further than the Rock’s original sin. Did the Chief Minister collude to squash an investigation? Or, was it the Royal Gibraltar Police that were mounting a cover up?

Enjoy the weekend folks. And please do get in touch with any thoughts or comments you might have!

Best,
Walt
