A Guardia Civil officer dies at La Vuelta a Espana

A GUARDIA Civil traffic officer has died in a motorcycle accident whilst on duty at the Vuelta a Espana. 

According to a police statement, his motorcycle left the road and crashed at 15:30 two hours before the end of stage 16.

The accident took place on the regional road AS-228 that joins Trubia with Ventana in the region of Farraopona.

After being removed by helicopter, the deceased was identified as a 41-year-old male stationed in Albacete.

Dozens of motorcycle officers accompany the Vuelta at each stage,  to ensure road safety for the cyclists.

Officials are now investigating what caused the accident.
