A COSTA del Sol animal shelter is appealing for help after the weekend’s storms washed away the enclosure tragically taking the lives of nine cats.
Non profit organisation, Gatos y Amigos in Estepona, has made a heartbreaking plea on social media after the sanctuary was severely flooded in the thunderstorms that ravaged the town on Sunday.
Tragically nine cats were unable to escape their enclosure and drowned. Others have still not been found.
Around 20 cats are temporarily being housed in a volunteer’s garage but a number of other animals still need somewhere to stay.

The shelter is appealing for support to rebuild the shelter, along with food donations, beds, blankets, bandages, towels, medicine, feeders, sand and sandboxes.
‘Yesterday we lived a nightmare, the kind you see in the news and something you think will never happen here,” a Facebook post read, “there’s nothing left… we were able to save many animals but others didn’t make it and others’ whereabouts are unknown.
“Please help us, we have lost everything and the animals have nowhere to go. Any help would be more than welcomed.”
The shelter has been dedicated to protecting abandoned cats in the area since it was founded in 2013.
