IN 2009 it was hailed as a cheaper alternative to natural grass that requires maintenance and frequent watering.

But the artificial grass installed in a children’s play park on Calle Elx, in Denia, has now been turfed up due to a crisis in hygiene.

Town Hall workers found the plastic ground cover soiled in dog excrement and urine, among other things, which did not decompose.

The council now plans to replant the area with natural grass and install two more trees.

But the plans must face another obstacle first: the broken irrigation system that runs through the Marina Alta capital.
