Irishman, 72, found dead in Costa Blanca home while his wife is rushed to hospital

A COSTA Blanca resort popular with expats has been plunged into mystery after an Irishman was found dead at his home – with his elderly wife rushed to hospital.

The unnamed man, 72, was discovered in his property in Orihuela Costa, near Alicante, after neighbours alerted police to a โ€˜worrying smellโ€™.

The alarm was raised shortly after 10.15am on Wednesday.

According to reports, the couple were found โ€˜semi-nakedโ€™ inside their property on Avenida Escorpiones, with the man believed to have been dead for some time with โ€˜brain injuriesโ€™.

His wife, 73, was rushed to hospital, where she is currently being treated in a non-life threatening condition.

Police found no signs of violence at the scene.

Initial reports described the pair as English and said the woman died shortly after emergency services attended the scene, but that was later corrected by the Guardia Civil.

Reports indicate that the man was a full-time carer for his wife, who police said had โ€˜limitationsโ€™.

A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil said: โ€œThe Alicante Guardia Civil confirms that on December 3 at around 11am, the death of a 72-year-old man was reported at his home in Orihuela Costa, where his wife, a 73-year-old woman who requires daily assistance, was present.

โ€œThe Pilar de la Horodada Judicial Police Team carried out a technical inspection of the scene, determining that there were no signs of foul play, and qualified medical personnel certified the manโ€™s natural death.

โ€œNo signs of violence were found on the individuals or in the home.

โ€œThe woman was taken by the health services to Torrevieja Hospital, where she remains, although her life is not in danger.โ€
