Trump calls for investigation into death of Spanish gang-rape victim, 25, by euthanasia: US president hits out at ‘systemic human rights failures’

THE Trump administration is calling for answers from the Spanish government after 25-year-old Noelia Castillo chose to end her own life by euthanasia last week.

The State Department instructed the US Embassy in Madrid to open an investigation into the Spanish law enforcement’s handling of the repeated sexual attacks against Castillo that drove her to a failed suicide attempt that left her paralysed.

The complaint has been revealed in a leaked diplomatic cable obtained by the American newspaper The Post.

Senior officials at the US Embassy were also instructed to convey to the Spanish government the Trump administration’s serious concerns regarding the numerous ‘systemic human rights failings’ that led Castillo to seek assisted suicide.

The administration raised concerns that the terminal act was allowed to be carried out even after she reportedly expressed hesitation in her final hours.

“We are aware of reports that Ms Castillo expressed hesitancy to undergo euthanasia in her final hours, but that these indications were ignored,” the administration said.

“This case raises serious concerns about the application of Spain’s euthanasia law, particularly in cases involving psychiatric conditions and non-terminal suffering.”

A lax immigration law could be the cause of the sexual assaults that Castillo suffered before the age of 21, according to unsubstantiated claims made by the Trump administration.

The Trump Administration demands investigation into the Spanish law enforcement.

“We are investigating allegations that the sexual assault of Ms Castillo was perpetrated by individuals of a migration background,” it said in the cable.

“Mass and illegal migration is a human rights concern, and Spain’s facilitation of mass and illegal migration represents a dangerous threat to the Spanish citizens.”

The US Embassy has been instructed to work with Spanish authorities to investigate the rapists, their migration status and the legal obstacles the police faced in pursuing the potential suspects.

There is no information to suggest that the men who raped Noelia were migrants.

The State Department asked US Embassy officials to convey these concerns to the Spanish government by April 3.

Last week, Castillo died while wearing her ‘prettiest dress’ after being given a lethal cocktail of three drugs that stopped her heart within 20 minutes.

Her father tried to stop the euthanasia for 18 months, but eventually lost his legal battle.
