DRIVERS in Spain could be hit with fines of up to €200 simply for failing to keep their cars clean, according to the national traffic authority.
The Direccion General de Trafico (DGT) has warned that number plates must remain ‘clearly legible at all times,’ with dirt, dust or grime build-ups potentially landing motorists in hot water.
Under Spain’s Law on traffic, motor vehicle circulation and road safety, deliberately obscuring a plate is treated even more seriously – with fines soaring to €6,000 and the loss of six licence points.

The warning comes as Andalucia prepares for another wave of so-called ‘blood rain,’ with forecasts from Meteo365 suggesting Saharan dust could sweep across the region as early as Tuesday afternoon.
The phenomenon is expected to coat vehicles in a thick layer of red-tinted sand, echoing similar conditions earlier this month when heavy rain turned cars across the region into muddy, dust-streaked messes.
With Saharan dust set to make another appearance, authorities are urging drivers not to underestimate the impact of a dirty vehicle.
Beyond the fines, poor visibility of plates can cause unnecessary complications with enforcement cameras and roadside checks.
As conditions turn again across southern Spain, motorists would be wise to keep their vehicles clean and regularly checked – not just for appearances, but to avoid turning a dusty parking spot into an expensive mistake.
