A YOUNG Islamic convert described by police as ‘obsessed with jihadist terrorism and filled with hatred towards Spain’ has been arrested in Tarifa, Cadiz.
The suspect was detained on Monday morning by officers from the Policia Nacional following an investigation into his alleged links to ISIS ideology and extremist propaganda.
He is suspected of alleged membership of a terrorist group, glorification of terrorism, self-training, self-indoctrination and the indoctrination of others.
Authorities believe the man had become deeply radicalised after a process of self-indoctrination.
According to investigators, the detainee had fully embraced the most extreme beliefs associated with Daesh, also known as Islamic State, and had even sworn allegiance to the terrorist group.
Police said the young man developed a growing obsession with jihadist terrorism and specifically with the mass attacks committed in Europe, including the 2016 attack in Nice, which killed 86 people.
Investigators also claim he held what they described as a ‘profound hatred’ for Spain and Spanish citizens.
The arrest was carried out in Tarifa, where officers also searched the suspect’s home.
During the operation, police seized large amounts of jihadist propaganda material along with several electronic devices that are still being examined by specialists.
The investigation was led by the General Information Commissariat in collaboration with the Local Information Brigade of Algeciras.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of the Central Court of Instance number five and the National Court prosecutor’s office.
The suspect appeared before the National Court on Wednesday, where a judge ordered his imprisonment.
