SILICON Valley giant OpenAI has set its sights on Madrid for its first Spanish office after a surge in ChatGPT users turned Spain into one of the company’s fastest-growing markets in Europe.
The new base will open in the second half of 2026, OpenAI confirmed, creating jobs across several key areas as the company expands its local workforce.
Weekly active users in Spain have risen by more than 40% over the past year, spokespeople have said, propelling the country into the company’s top five European markets.
The Madrid office is expected to serve as a hub supporting businesses, developers, universities and public institutions that are integrating OpenAI’s technology into their operations.
OpenAI said the decision was influenced by Spain’s growing technology ecosystem, increasing investment in innovation and strong demand for AI products.
Emmanuel Marill, OpenAI’s head of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said Spain stands out as one of the continent’s most dynamic artificial intelligence markets.
He highlighted the country’s entrepreneurial environment and growing appetite for digital transformation.
The move comes as competition intensifies among global technology companies seeking to establish a stronger presence in Europe.
Governments and businesses across the continent are increasing investment in AI as they race to improve productivity and remain competitive.
