IF you think the summer heat is too much for a weekend of moshing and headbanging, you’re clearly just not hardcore enough.
In a brutal clash of calendars, three of the country’s major rock festivals once again overlap on the first weekend of July.
For fans, it’s an impossible choice (or desperate road trip). For promoters, it’s a battle to sweep in ticket sales for a very similar – and riff-hungry – fanbase.
In the northern town of Lugo (Galicia), this weekend will mark the final days of Resurrection Fest, internationally renowned for hardcore metal headliners.
Big names such as Sabaton and Iron Maiden have already swept the stage, and fans are gearing up for upcoming acts such as Limp Bizkit tonight (Friday), and the iconic Marilyn Manson headlining the closing night on Saturday.
But don’t worry if you missed those two major artists in Lugo – they’re not done yet. Head southwest to Cartagena (Murcia), and you’re just in time for the city’s annual Rock Imperium festival, which kicks off tonight.
Renowned for classic heavy metal, this year’s festival shares headliners with its Galician rival: Iron Maiden headlining Saturday, and Sabaton on its closing night, Sunday.
Much to every metalhead’s chagrin, however, these dates overlap exactly with the final major rock festival of the weekend: the Barcelona Rock Fest.
With major headliners such as Megadeth, Sex Pistols and the Offspring, this festival ventures into broader rock flavours than its competitors, offering fans a stronger punk edge to balance out the heavy metal.
An unfortunate overlap, but an iconic weekend for metal fans wherever they end up.
Come Monday, and Spain’s ears will no doubt be left ringing with the distorted echo of international rock icons.
