TWO Orihuela Costa beaches have raised red flags banning swimming after excess contamination levels were discovered in the water.
Orihuela council has imposed a bathing ban at La Glea in Campoamor and Aquamarina in Cabo Roig after routine tests were carried out on Monday.
Pollution levels were found to be twice the acceptable limit following analysis by the Ministry of Environment and Water.

The local council says the ban was taken as a preventative measure and will remain in force until new tests show there is no risk to swimmers.
The Ministry of Environment and Water carries out regular checks on water quality to monitor possible changes to guarantee the safety of bathers.
Work is going on to find the source of the contamination as soon as possible and to rectify the issue with the help of staff from the General Directorate of Water.
Orihuela council’s Beaches Department stated that updates will be issued as to when swimming can resume at La Glea and Aquamarina during the busiest time of the year.
La Glea is a Blue Flag beach and is one of the largest Orihuela Costa beaches stretching for over 500 metres in length- similar in size to Aquamarina, which also has a Blue Flag which recognises water quality and environmental issues.
It’s the latest pollution scare to affect the area with a lack of capacity of the sewage system to pump wastewater to treatment plants for the Orihuela Costa and in Torrevieja.
Spills led to Cala La Mosca losing its coveted Blue Flag status in 2025.
