FORGET the Sagrada Familia or the Alhambra – two far less obvious Spanish attractions have beaten out their better-known peers to become some of the most sought-after tourist experiences in the world.
The Neocave and Museum of Altamira in Cantabria and the ferry to the Cies Islands from Vigo were both among the world’s top ten best-selling paid tourist experiences between June and September, according to new figures from Spanish travel platform Civitatis.
Altamira was the biggest Spanish hit, ranking second worldwide, beaten only by a tour of Rome’s iconic Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

The pre-historic site even came ahead of world-famous attractions including the Vatican museums and Sistine Chapel, which ranked third, as well as tours of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps in Poland and boat trips along the River Seine in Paris.
The experience takes visitors to the National Museum and Research Centre of Altamira and its famous Neocave – a painstaking replica of the original cave.
The reproduction allows visitors to see the famous paintings while learning about the people who lived in the area thousands of years ago.

A ferry from Vigo in northern Spain to the Cies Islands, meanwhile, ranked eight in the world.
The spectacular Atlantic archipelago forms part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia Maritime-Terrestrial National Park, with visitors able to wind down exploring its beaches, hiking trails and rugged coastal landscapes.
The two experiences were the only Spanish entries in the global top 10, according to Civitatis, which operates guided tours, excursions and activities across more than 4,200 destinations.
