Olive Press Round-Up: The biggest stories in Spain – Sun 23rd Nov 25

From The Digital Editor

Walter Finch

Dear Olive Press readers,

We’re fresh off the back of recording yet another podcast, which should go live later on today so I definitely recommend you check it out when it goes live at 5pm today.

The podcast is where we delve in behind the scenes of the news, how we found the stories, how we investigated them – and what we weren’t able to publish. So there is where you might get the juicy source.

It’s hosted by Caroline Lips of Staysure Insurance and usually features myself and Jon Clarke the editor/owner of the OP. Sometimes we bring in a guest speaker.

Episode 9 was recorded but has never been released, very sadly, thanks to technical gremlins which chewed up the sound quality on one of the mics. And it was a doozy – we tackled the scourge of scoundrels taking over charities on the Costa del Sol and using them as their own piggybanks.

This week, which has been gremlin-free, we talked about the two big stories of the week, both which bring shame on the police but in very different ways.

Jon reported on a bigshot Costa del Sol lawyer who got randomly beaten up by police while on a night out in the Algarve (Portugal), while I covered the tale of how authorities in Almeria have closed the case on the murder of a Brit without chasing all the leads.

A WELL known expat lawyer has been hospitalised after police and bouncers attacked him on a night out in Portugal. The solicitor, based between Marbella and Alicante, needed treatment after…

EDITOR’S PICKS:

Here’s an interesting one for anyone who needs to go through the tortuous process of getting their TIE or sorting out their immigration status – Spain is going to overhaul how you do it. A digital revolution should ensure that you no longer need to drive far and wide in order to find an office willing to give you an appointment several months in the future.

In the spirit of improving awful services and rules, it’s also looking like Spain is going to pass a bill nixing the absurd rule that home owners have to keep paying the bills for squatters who take over their properties. Hallelujah!

The Costa del Sol – and Gibraltar – received a surprising guest last weekend when Donald Trump Jr blew into town. He attended a mysterious business meeting on the Rock about the proposed €2 billion data centre they want to build there, and then hung out in the Puente Romano in Marbella with his new girlfriend.

The much-talked about and never-happening Costa del Sol train line has been the subject of an innovative new idea to overcome the myriad obstacles that have so far stopped it from being built for the past 50 years – build it as an underground tunnel running directly under the A7 motorway.

Enjoy the weekend folks. And please do get in touch with any thoughts or comments you might have!

Best,
Walt
