PINEDA BEACH: where the girl was bathing when she was swept away

A FIVE-year-old girl has drowned after being swept out to sea in northeastern Spain by strong winds and waves.

The child had been using an inflatable to bathe on Pineda beach near Tarragona when waves pushed her half a mile from the coast.

A Red Cross boat rescued the girl from the water, however attempts at their resuscitation were unsuccessful.

According to reports in the Spanish press, there was no lifeguard on duty on the beach when the incident occurred.
