WATCH: Hail storms cause ‘doomsday’ floods in Madrid as cars swept away by huge rapids and vineyards destroyed

THIS is the shocking moment a street in Madrid was turned into ‘hellish’ rapids following storms and heavy rainfall this afternoon.

Vehicles can be seen being washed away by the gushing stream in the streets of Arganda, an area just south east of Madrid capital.

The footage was tweeted by climate expert Mario Picazo.

“A strong thunderstorm has hit the southeast of Madrid,” he wrote, “These are the first images from the streets of Arganda, where the skies have collapsed in just a few minutes… wow!”

The hail storm has caused serious flooding in several villages, with Arganda, Valdemoro and Pinto among the worst hit.

Parts of the M40 and M30 motorways have been cut off while lines 5 and 9 of the metro have also been affected.

Arganda saw 40 litres of hail fall per square metre between 5.30pm and 6pm.

At least 50 vehicles have been damaged there alone while several vineyards have also been destroyed.

Residents have been shovelling hail out of their homes and businesses.

“The storm started around 6pm and only lasted about 10 minutes but has caused a disaster,” one local told El Mundo.

“I have been living here for 20 years and have never seen anything like it.”

One shop owner says his premises looks like it has taken a tonne of hail and said there are scenes of chaos as businesses are totally flooded.
