AN Irish man has died following a freak swimming accident while on a pilgrimage in Spain.

Timothy Kelleher, who was in his 30s, drowned late last night in a resort in northern Spain.

The holidaymaker had been taking part in the famous Camino Santiago de Compostela when the tragic incident took place.

According to the Irish Examiner, Kelleher went for swim to unwind after a long day of walking.

However he ‘experienced difficulty’ after getting into the water and was found unconscious just moments later.

Friends tried their best to resuscitate him as paramedics arrived but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A post-mortem will be performed in the next few days.

Ireland’s foreign office is said to be offering support to the family and aiding in the repatriation of the body.
