A GOVERNMENT mechanic has been sentenced to eight months prison for filling up his car using an unauthorised fuel card in Alicante.

The man took €1,800 using the official card between December 2011 to September 2012, court papers revealed.

The sentence handed down from the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV) came after the man appealed an Alicante court’s ruling.

The highest court in the Valencian region however rejected the idea the man was ‘innocent’ to the crime of fraud, as he had been a municipal mechanic since 1994.

The court found he had used fuel cards reserved for official government vehicles to fill up his personal car in an El Campello petrol station – especially at weekends.

The mechanic is suspended from working in the public sector and must now repay Alicante Town Hall the precise amount pilfered – €1,829.74 – as well as the legal fees of the prosecution.
