13 COSTA BLANCA councils, including Benidorm and Dénia, have been told to take the ‘strictest possible measures’ to clamp down on too many people meeting socially and on illegal drinks parties, known as botellóns.

Valencia’s Health Minister, Ana Barceló, laid down the law in a teleconference with the 13 municipalities.

The edict came with a strong hint that if the councils don’t take action, then the regional government will step in with a tough response.

Barceló made her views clear to representatives from Orihuela, Benidorm, Dénia, Ibi, Ondara, La Nucia, Crevillente, Hondón de las Nieves, Pinoso, Callosa de Segura, Benilloba, Banyeres and Villena.

The largest number of new confirmed cases over the last two weeks in the 13 areas has been in Dénia with 217, followed by Benidorm on 97 and Orihuela with 81.

New cases on the Costa Blanca have reached levels last seen in March with younger people accounting for the bulk of new infections.
