Firefighters managed to remove him from the vehicle, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 48-year-old driver of the van was taken to Torrecardenas Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances that led the driver to enter the motorway in the wrong direction.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about safety on this stretch of motorway, which has seen a series of accidents in recent years.
