MADRID has been named one of the world’s cultural capitals for 2026, breaking into Time Out’s global top ten thanks to its museums, theatres and live music scene.
The capital is the only Spanish city to secure a spot in the top 20, ranking at eighth place trailing London, Paris and New York City which claim the three top spots.
Time Out bases its rankings on feedback from residents and 91% of madrileños described the city’s arts and culture scene as ‘good’ or ‘amazing’.

In particular, the city’s world-class museums stand out, with 90% of locals naming them as Madrid’s strongest cultural asset.
With the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza all boasting internationally renowned collections, and the newly inaugurated Gaviria Palace opening with an exhibition dedicated to Dali, Madrid continues to strengthen its reputation as one of Europe’s art centres.
Madrid was also praised for its thriving theatre scene.
On Gran Via, often nicknamed Spain’s Broadway, audiences can enjoy productions such as Les Miserables, Wicked and The Book of Mormon.

Meanwhile, the city is home to performing arts festivals such as Festival de Otoño and Surge Madrid, which showcase alternative and experimental theatre, highlighting the range of theatre on offer.
It’s not just art and theatre, but also music, with Madrid’s live music scene also praised by Time Out.

Puerto Rican reggaeton superstar Bad Bunny is about to kick off a sold-out ten day residency at Madrid’s Metropolitano stadium, while Shakira has also announced 12 shows in the capital.
Festivals such as Mad Cool and Noches del Botanico will also bring major international musicians to the capital, with artists including Van Morrison, Rick Astley and Tom Jones set to perform in Madrid’s botanical gardens.
Considering all of the capital’s cultural offerings, it’s easy to see why it claimed a spot in the top ten – and it could be a while before Benidorm catches up.
