AN ATTEMPT to bail a man suspecting of killing John George in December 2024 has been refused by a Torrevieja judge who deemed him a flight risk.
Jonny Smyth’s lawyer had asked for bail of €150,000 and a requirement to report to the police every day as well as a ban on using social media.
Prime suspect Smyth, 27, was arrested at an apartment in Portugal in March 2025 and extradited to Spain the following month.

Father-of-two John George from Belfast was killed in December 2024 while staying with Smyth in Cabo Roig on the Orihulea Costa.
His body was discovered dumped in a field in Rojales, near Torrevieja on January 7, 2025.
Jonny Smyth was initially bailed in December 2025 after spending nearly eight months behind bars.
He was sent back to prison in April when a court accused him of ‘disrespecting the justice system’.
A judge reviewed social media postings by Smyth and his wife Madison which mocked the George family.
The latest move to free him failed when Judge Juana Lopez Hoyos rejected the €150,000 bail application.
Court documents quoted the judge as saying that ‘a person accused of homicide with sufficient financial means could simply forfeit the bail and flee abroad’.
The judge added that Smyth ‘had previously stated, in proceedings concerning an alleged breach of court measures, that if released he would leave the country’.
No trial date has yet been set.
On March 1, an alleged accomplice of Smyth in the John George killing, Czech national Michael Maly, was shot dead close to Torrevieja’s Rocio del Mar beach.
A 40-year-old man from Manchester and living in Torre Pacheco, Murcia, was subsequently arrested.
