THE murder of a Hungarian woman in Benahavis, which was initially ruled out as a case of gender violence, has now been ruled back in.
New evidence suggests that the woman and her killer – a 60-year-old Argentinian man – had a romantic relationship in 2019.
The 45-year-old woman was discovered with multiple stab wounds and a slit throat in her home in Los Arqueros on July 21.
The perpetrator fled the scene, and was on the run for 10 days, before the Guardia Civil located him in Istan, around 30km away from the crime scene.
The man had reportedly tried to slit his own throat upon being busted, and was taken to hospital Costa del Sol, where he has now been discharged and will face a court.
Investigators on the case concluded that the case may count as an act of gender violence, after finding out the pair were previously in a relationship.
After breaking things off in 2019, the man moved back to Argentina, before returning to Spain several months ago and living in a spare room, rented out by his ex-partner in her home.
Police are also not ruling out that the victim was sexually assaulted – as the deep wounds in her neck, and torn pieces of her shirt and bra suggest signs of struggle.
Because of these circumstances, the case has been transferred to a court responsible for handling cases of violence against women.
If the case is confirmed as a gender-based murder, it will add to the staggering count of 31 women that have been killed by current or former partners in Spain this year.
