The Ultima Hora newspaper reported that airport security staff and the police pinned the tourist down to the ground due to his highly agitated state.

The violent incident started when a taxi driver was inside his cab in the airport arrivals area.

He told off several pedestrians for using a crossing when the red light was against them.

A British man peeled away from the group and went to the car, where he opened the passenger door while the cab was moving.

The driver pulled over and asked for an explanation but was punched in the face and fell to the ground.

A colleague saw what happened and came to help, but was hit his chest and abdomen.

During that time the Brit repeatedly struck the hood, front door and the left wing of the second taxi.

A third driver, with the help of several people who were at the scene, helped the two victims and subdued the irate tourist until airport security staff arrived.

The two drivers told the Policia Nacional that they suffered pain as a result of the assaults and needed treatment at a health centre.

No further details have been supplied about the British detainee or his subsequent court appearance.
