Dear Olive Press readers,
It’s been a tumultuous week at the Olive Press as we bade farewell to two journalist stalwarts in the shape of ex-digital editor Laurence Dollimore and Costa del Sol reporter Yzabelle Boston.
They’ve gone on to pastures new and instead we’ve welcomed two new journalists; Samantha Mythen from New Zealand and Dylan Wagemans from Belgium. They will work alongside the regulars; OP titan Alex Trelinski and up-and-comer Tom Ewart Smith.
Despite the changeover, the news in Spain continues and the Olive Press keeps delivering it to you.
The Olive Press’s Facebook presence continues to go from strength to strength with the addition of social media manager Alicia Kirk to the team.
Her post on the Financial Times calling Spain a ‘new economic star’ triggered HUNDREDS of comments – mostly cynical if we’re honest – and has made the news story one of the most popular of the week.
The main story in Spain this week has been the impending citizen uprising in almost every town and city across the country that may well be underway by the time you read this. Millions of people are expected to protest the country’s precarious housing situation, as we covered in this article.
Some groups are demanding protection for squatters’ rights, just as a new law was announced that is set to make evicting tenants easier.
In politics, Spain has been aghast at Donald Trump’s 20% tariffs, and Pedro Sanchez has set up a €14 billion fund to support Spanish companies.
Meanwhile, readers have been gripped by the tale of a British tourist who’s Airpods were stolen by a Malaga Airport worker. She has been tracking the thief’s life and movements daily through the Find my iPhone app, helpless to catch the person despite knowing where they are at almost all times.
One family from Wales flew out to Alicante this week to hunt for a father who went missing after a stag party in Benidorm. Thankfully he turned up, having been spotted ambling along the beach by a local woman.
The weather, as ever, is never far from people’s thoughts. A brief sunny spell at the end of March belied yet more storms over Spain this month, with the Canary Islands being subject to a red alert warning for hurricanes and ‘extraordinary danger.’
It turns out there are more Manchego cheese fans out there than commonly thought, who have been heartily served by our ‘all there is to know’ piece on the topic.
The Iberian Funeral Homes saga rumbled on, as hundreds of expat victims who’ve lost thousands are calling for reform of the alarmingly-unregulated sector.
The Olive Press took to the streets to canvas people’s opinions on a thorny and potentially thought-provoking question: are you an expat or an immigrant?
Over in Gibraltar, they announced the appointment of a new Commissioner of Police from out of town – always an intriguing topic considering the difficulties the previous two incumbents have had.
Meanwhile, there is allegedly trouble and strife in the Gibraltar women’s football team, as insiders explained a story of division inside the squad. And is a treaty deal actually getting close?
And – not to end on an alarming note – but the Guardia Civil announced they were investigating a neo-Nazi group in Madrid who called on the people to ‘rise up the foreign immigrant invasion.’
