Dear Olive Press readers,
I try not to start every newsletter talking about the weather but it’s not always easy. This weekend, for example, we are under our first heat alert of the summer.
SPAIN is bracing for its first major heatwave of the summer, with temperatures potentially soaring above 45C in some regions.
Residents and tourists alike are advised to remain indoors as much as possible – just a week after storms wracked many parts of Spain.
In fact the Olive Press is sending me personally to what should be the hottest part of Spain this weekend (Ecija in Sevilla) to bask in the delights of 46C and report back on it for your entertainment. So look out for that.
We are aware that a number of our readers are very hostile to our weather reporting, believing that we are pushing some ‘globalist climate conspiracy’ agenda and so forth. This is not the case.
Generally we just report on the weather when it’s something out of the ordinary, such as intense heat or storms, etc. We don’t report when it’s 25C. However, when there were more days over 40C by June 8 this year than all previous years combined, we report on it.
Meanwhile, OP grand fromage Jon Clarke is currently over in the Costa de la Luz in Cadiz eating six meals a day in order to write up our upcoming supplement detailing what is honestly one of Spain’s most gorgeous regions.
But before that we have had a busy week reporting on all things housing in Spain for this coming week’s property supplement.
We start with news that the EU is investigating Spain for targeting foreigners with discriminatory property taxes, and cases are proliferating of thieves stealing homes with fake power of attorney.
The upper end of Spain’s housing market is still going loco, while a real estate expert has warned inexperienced investors to avoid the cheap property trap. And the Spanish authorities have been urged to invest in regional public transport to ease demand on congested city favourites.
Not quite property but still bricks and mortar – the town hall in La Linea de La Concepcion has released plans to build a new terminal at Gibraltar airport on the Spanish side of the border and create a hub of 120,000 people.
Meanwhile, Easyjet staff have been staging strikes this week, leading to travel chaos for thousands and hundreds of flights to Spain cancelled.
And before he was stuffing his face in Cadiz, Jon Clarke was roving around Ibiza, where he found employed and salaried workers living in shanty towns because there are no rental homes available.
I have the feeling Ibiza is going to be a focus of our reporting this summer, not just for economic conditions but also for tourist antics. Videos went viral this week of Brits brawling on the island, with it being revealed that one of the yobs who threw a stool at a woman is a professional English footballer.
NEW videos keep emerging of tourists behaving badly in Ibiza this summer. Two new incidents captured on camera.
AN English professional footballer has been identified as the man who hurled a chair at a woman during a chaotic poolside brawl in Ibiza.Â
The Costa del Sol wouldn’t be the Costa del Sol without some grim crime news, and it came last week in the form of a female bodybuilder known as ‘She-Hulk’, who was battered to death by her husband. He used a hammer to do it and then appeared to stab himself to death.
We’ll leave it there on that cheery note. Please be careful with the heat this weekend if you’re living in inland areas (sea birds will probably be fine).
Ps. our summer sale is now on! 50% off on our very reasonable subscription rate – but the deal runs out soon so hurry if you want full access to all our news.
