Under Spain’s tough new Animal Welfare Law, the ‘crime of animal abandonment’ comes with a sanction of between €10,000 and €50,000.

“We are carrying out inquiries to identify the perpetrator and file a complaint for a crime of animal abandonment,” the police said.

“Witnesses claim that the owner is the driver of an old silver Seat Leon car.”

The force has told anyone with information to get in touch via phone, email or social media.

According to the law, other penalties may be imposed depending on the severity of the crime committed.

If injury or death of the animal is involved, the owner may face a prison sentence ranging from three to 18 months.
